Here we will be discussing the basics of RC Electric Cars for the beginner. Let's start with the RC in an RC car. A common misconception that most people who are new to this hobby have is that this stands for remote controlled. While it's true that these cars are remotely controlled, they are controlled from a radio transmitter, not by a cable attached from the controller to the vehicle. In the old days, they were connected this way, and some of the cheaper toy models for little kids are still this way, but for the most part, the transmitter controls the car by a radio frequency, pick up by a receiver in the car itself.
The next part of RC electric cars is the transmitter itself. There are two styles of controllers. One is a boxy looking controller, with one knob that controls the forward and reverse motion, the other makes the car go left or right. While these were much more common in older RC car models, they were bulky and hard to control. Now we are seeing a much better design. These radio transmitters have pistol grips, you can control the throttle with the squeeze of a trigger, and the steering is actually controlled with a small steering wheel attached to the unit. This makes the vehicle much easier to control in the long run, since it is not unlike steering a regular car. It still takes a bit of practice, especially for kids that don't drive real cars.
The next part of RC electric cars is the car itself. There are really three types of RC car models. You have your electric car, gas, or Nitro powered vehicle. With Nitro and gas models, an internal combustion motor powers the car. You have a gas tank, and some kind of gasoline fuel mixture. This can be very messy as well as dangerous, trying to fill the tanks or mix the fuel together. Because they have a combustion motor, they are also noisy and emit exhaust fumes. Sure, these go really fast, up to thirty-five miles an hour or more, but the problem is that these can be a little too fast for a beginner who doesn't have the practice and experience.
With RC electric cars, the RC car model has an electric motor instead. These can be still pretty powerful, propelling the vehicle up to 30mph. The difference is that an electric motor has less moving parts, offers silent running, and takes a rechargeable battery pack to run not only the motor but also the receiver. While a gas car makes the car go, you still need some kind of battery to make the receiver work.
Now RC electric cars can be just as good and complex as gas RC car models are, with full suspensions, racing chassis, or off road capabilities. The advantages are that they run longer, are easier to deal with for a beginner, but also ideal for the more advanced hobbyist who doesn't want to deal with all the problems associated with gas or Nitro powered vehicles. An electric RC vehicle can be run just about anywhere because of their silent operation, and there is no worries about exhaust fumes or dangerous liquids.

Car Insurance News: Charging is for Vehicles, Not for Insurance, Says Adrian Flux

Electric vehicles (EVs) could - finally - be set for takeoff as practical, fast cars. In fact, the latest models, such as the Norfolk-built Tesla Roadster, can outperform most petrol models, with phenomenal dragster-style acceleration. This year's Detroit motor show suggests that they might just - finally - be arriving in enough numbers to be an affordable option for serious drivers, and create a whole new market.
Not just affordable, but cool too. The latest EVs also promise to usher in a new generation of greener motoring, and the days of 'liquid-drive' finally look numbered.
However, keen buyers of the new breed of performance electric cars may find that no matter how cool they are, one hot shock awaits them - insurance.
Specialist broker Adrian Flux Insurance Services says that these 'early adopters' might find it hard to get cheap insurance cover for a variety of reasons. Not least, the likelihood that many insurance companies are wary of new types of vehicle until there are enough of them on the road to give statistics. Electric vehicles are often classed alongside kit cars or one-offs, something that would make many insurers give higher premiums.
So Adrian Flux is setting up an electric car division in advance to ensure that when electric vehicles hit the mass market in the UK, buyers will have at least one option for cheaper insurance that understands the needs of the EV driver.
"We've been insuring electric vehicles for many years," says Gerry Bucke, commercial director at Adrian Flux. "However, most of them to date have been low-performance models, such as milk floats or the cute mini-cars like the G-Whiz. They are still mostly a niche market for city commuting and shopping, and aren't seen as risky.
"But the new generation are a different matter. They are quieter than petrol cars and with very fast acceleration - in the case of the Tesla, 0-60 in under four seconds, without the usual roar of a performance car.
"This is going to change how people behave. Not just the EV drivers themselves, but other drivers, and pedestrians too."
Gerry Bucke says that that a 2009 Tesla Roadster, owned and driven by a 48 year old man in the Norfolk NR20 area with 5 years' no-claims, should cost about £750 to insure comprehensively. A roughly equivalent petrol-driven performance car, the Porsche 911 Turbo, would cost perhaps slightly more - around £800 - for a similar level of cover.
"Until insurance companies get the statistics, they might be tempted to load premiums just to be on the safe side. We want to make sure that customers aren't penalised for going green and we'll be working hard to help the insurance companies get it right," says Gerry Bucke.

First Quarter Sales Figures For Hybrid Vehicles Impact The New Hybrid Car Tax Credit

The numbers are in. Toyota and Lexus outpaced their rivals by selling a combined 41,779 hybrid vehicles during the first quarter of 2006. Honda sold 9,072 hybrids and Ford and Mercury sold a combined 6,192 hybrids during the first three months of 2006.
Why are these sales figures important? "Effective January 1, 2006, anyone who purchases a new hybrid vehicle is eligible for a tax credit of up to $ 3,400," explains Andrew Schwartz CPA, founder of CPA Niche, LLC (http://www.cpaniche.com), a site where taxpayers can interact with CPAs who specialize in a variety of niches such as healthcare, real estate professionals, and lawyers. "The catch is this credit begins to phase out for each manufacturer upon selling 60,000 hybrids," as follows:
The full credit is allowed through the end of the quarter following the quarter during which the manufacturer sells its 60,000th hybrid vehicle after January 1, 2006.
The credit is cut in half for the subsequent two quarters.
The credit is then cut to twenty-five percent of the original credit for the subsequent two quarters.
No credit is allowed for vehicles purchased from that manufacturer thereafter.
The hybrid car tax credit is currently set to expire on December 31, 2010. "Even so, if you're thinking about purchasing a Toyota or Lexus, don't delay!" warns Schwartz. "Based on the sales figures for the first quarter of 2006, the allowable credit for their hybrids is on track to be cut in half on October 1, 2006 and then will be fully phased out on September 30, 2007."
The New Hybrid Vehicle Tax Credit
Prior to January 1, 2006, anyone who purchased a new hybrid was eligible to claim the $ 2,000 "Clean Fuel" deduction. The Energy Tax Incentives Act of 2005 enacted a more valuable tax credit for hybrid purchasers.
To qualify for this tax credit, the hybrid purchased must be a new vehicle. According to the IRS, "the original use of the vehicle must begin with you", so used vehicles don't qualify. Leasing a hybrid doesn't qualify the lessee for the credit. "If a qualifying vehicle is leased to a consumer, the leasing company may claim the credit," explains the IRS. And the final condition to qualify for this tax credit is that you use your hybrid predominantly within the United States.

To claim this new tax credit, taxpayers need to complete and attach a Form 8910 (available at http://www.irs.gov) to their federal income tax return.
While the form seems simple enough to complete, anyone subject to the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) might completely lose out on this new tax break. "And with more and more people paying this tax each year, working through a tax projection is the best way to determine if you'll be hit by the AMT the year you plan to purchase your hybrid vehicle," suggests Schwartz.
