The world is shifting to abundant, secure, cheap, clean energy. It will take many decades, but the shift is inevitable. The cost of renewable energy is already much lower than most people think, and coming down all the time. And all these developments reinforce each other - electric vehicles can store intermittent power from solar and wind - and are being woven together by the roll-out of an intelligent, smart grid. This past Thursday, the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid made its driving debut on a closed road in Monterey California, just days prior to its appearance at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. After being shipped over from Germany by plane, engineers handed the keys of the new 918 Spyder Hybrid to Porsche AG Design Chief Michael Mauer. The car drove under its own power which comes from the mid mounted 3.4 liter V8 out of the RS Spyder as well as in all electric mode which powers just the front wheels. The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing features and electro-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities: An emission level of just 70 grams CO2 per kilometre on fuel consumption of three litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg imp) truly outstanding even for an ultra-compact city car, on the one hand, combined with the performance of a super sports car and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph) plus, and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT, on the other.

With car manufacturers looking for ways to help the environment, new clean car technologies have been developed. These technologies are used by the roving green cars of today. There are various technologies from which to choose from. Car manufacturers have already come up with the gas-electric hybrid, flex fuel vehicles, and those clean diesel vehicles.
The popularity of these types of clean technologies varies from region to region. In the United States, hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius are the most popular of all clean car technologies. In Europe, on the other hand, diesel engines designed to be clean, fuel efficient and of high performance are popular. In Brazil, it is flex-fuel vehicles which are popular due to the abundance of bio-ethanol in the said country. This is the reason why Toyota will be marketing two Corolla variants at the said country - both of which are designed to run on both bio-ethanol and conventional gasoline.
The Japanese company’s Brazilian subsidiary reported that the two Corolla variants will outperform the existing gasoline engine powered Toyota Corolla. The first of the two Corollas is the Corolla Flex which the company hopes to have an initial monthly sale of 2,500 units. The second Corolla model is the Corolla Fielder Flex. For the Fielder Flex, Toyota aims for an initial monthly sale of 750 units. These vehicles are equipped with an engine similar in principle and construction to that of a gasoline engine.

The only difference is that several parts of the engines which run on ethanol need to be fortified still. This is because ethanol is more corrosive than gasoline and to combat this corrosive nature of the alternative fuel, different parts such as fuel lines, valves, cylinder walls, and other parts which comes in contact with the fuel and its emission needs to be reinforced. Other parts such as Airaid cold air intake systems are not affected directly by the corrosive nature of the fuel.
The two Corolla variants according to the company are the first for-market vehicles that can run on pure ethanol that Toyota produces. While there are already many flex-fuel vehicles in the market, the majority of them are not designed to run on pure ethanol. Most of them are configured to run on E10 or E85. The number (10 and 85) pertains to the percentage of bio-ethanol on the fuel. For example, an E85 fuel is 85 percent bio-ethanol and 15 percent gasoline.
One problem though with using pure ethanol as fuel is that a car will be hard to start during the cold weather. To solve this problem some car manufacturers includes a small gasoline reservoir in the car so that gasoline can be sued to start the engine. After the engine is started, it automatically shifts to bio-ethanol. The use of bio-ethanol reduces the amount of greenhouse gas emission which contributes heavily to global warming.
The popularity of ethanol as fuel in Brazil is due to the fact that it is currently largest importer of ethanol in the world. The abundance of sugarcane in the country means that it is suited to producing the alternative fuel. For the past couple of yeas, car companies have been taking advantage of this abundance of ethanol by introducing flex-fuel vehicles in the Brazilian auto market. Given the fact that ethanol is cheaper than gasoline in the country, Brazilian car buyers are quick to shift from pure gasoline cars to flex-fuel cars. Flex-fuel vehicles are so popular in fact that it is reported that eight out of ten new cars sold in the country are flex-fuel vehicles.
With the introduction of the Toyota Corollas to the market, and the fact that the new vehicles are said to be better than the gasoline Corolla, the number of flex-fuel cars on Brazil’s roads will surely increase in the near future.

You look around while your stopped at a traffic light and realize that your surrounded by hybrids. Then it hits you that hybrids really are the new wave of the coming future. Hybrids offer many features that the conventional car does not have. But no matter how advances hybrids are they are still expensive to purchase and repair, just like any other car. Some repairs and problems with a hybrid need to be done by a hybrid certified mechanic. Before you make the leap and buy a new hybrid you might want to take a look at two of the major repairs you might have to deal with after you make your purchase.
Engine and Motor Repairs
Just like conventional cars hybrids also have a gasoline only internal combustion engine. During the life of your car there will probably be a point where your car will leak oil and will then be in need of repair. You might have a point where your hybrid’s motor will not babel to turn over or the connective system that runs your wiring could become loose and will need to be repairs. Because unlike the conventional car hybrids have both an electric motor and a gasoline engine the make up that lies under the hood of a hybrid is quite different from a conventional car. While a hybrid is great in so many ways a regular mechanic might not be qualified or have the ability to service your hybrids engine or motor.
The Battery Pack
If your used to driving a conventional car you know that they run on a lead acid battery. When it dies you can usually replace it easily yourself. You just have to purchase on at the local auto part store, purchase a new battery and replace it in only a few hours. Sometimes conventional car battery issues can even be solved by simply giving it a jump start. Hybrids on the other hand are not so simple to fix. The ability to hook your car up to another vehicle to get a jump is not an option for a hybrid. The hybrid does not come equipt with a place to hook the cars together and if you try to do so you will more than likely end up ruining both cars, permanently.
If the battery pack in a hybrid fails you only have two options to fix it. Both of these options involve a specially trained mechanic. You might only have one cell inside the hybrid battery pack that is malfunctioning or it could be the whole battery pack that is malfunctioning. If it is only one cell in your battery pack that will only cost you about 0. If it is the entire battery pack your look at a cost of about ,000 or even more. It depends on the type of hybrid you own.It takes time for mechanics to become trained for all the new parts of technology that are coming into our world. Over the years things will change and there will be more mechanics available to hybrid cars. But for now the pool is quite limited.
