An Economical Solution For Electric Car Manufacturing

(PRWeb UK) September 29, 2010

It is well known how important it is to be eco-friendly, which is why more and more people are taking action and opting for electric vehicles. These cars are powered by lithium ion batteries which are smaller and lighter than traditional vehicle batteries. However, EVB’s are constructed from a combination of materials, posing a particular challenge when welding.

Fortunately, tests conducted by JK™ Lasers have proven that their portfolio of fiber lasers are capable of welding together the aluminium and copper found within these components.

The trials, conducted using a single mode JK™ fiber laser, demonstrated that the laser’s high beam quality and brightness, can achieve consistent, defect free joints at higher speeds – features which are crucial for most battery manufacturers. The laser’s small spot size also produced narrow welds, which minimised the formation of brittle intermetallics.

In addition to the physical properties that the results show a fiber laser can attain, the compact footprint and low power consumption of these lasers ensure that the manufacturing process is just as economical as the resulting vehicle.

Traffic to Cost2Drive.com Surges Amid Soaring Gas Prices; C2G Launches Revolutionary Tool to Help Consumers Understand Commuting Costs

Commuting Calculator

Great Falls, VA (PRWEB) March 4, 2011

With gas prices soaring and concerns about the economic recovery weighing on consumers' minds, C2G, a Virginia-based Web company that helps people determine the cost of going places, announces that traffic to Cost2Drive.com is growing rapidly and that over 500,000 people have now visited the site since its launch in October of 2008.

Cost2Drive has been featured on CNN MONEY and NBC's TODAY show. "When we first launched Cost2Drive.com we believed that consumers would value the ability to easily determine the cost of driving places, especially in a period of rising gas prices" said Jim Kovarik, the President and Cofounder of C2G. "Today we're seeing that validated as consumers are visiting the site in record numbers to plan upcoming travel. Not only have daily visits to the site doubled over the past three months but that growth is accelerating in the first days of March."

AAA has reported that the recent spike in gas prices has broken records for this time of year and the Energy Information Administration projects average US gas prices will continue to climb through the summer driving season, possibly reaching $ 4.00 per gallon. Some areas of the country including California and Chicago are already reporting gas prices in excess of $ 4.00 for regular grade fuel.

"There's no question that this is contributing to the traffic growth we're experiencing on Cost2Drive" said Mr. Kovarik. "People want to know how these gas prices are going to impact their travel budget and so they turn to our site for help. Not only do we provide the estimated cost of the trip but we help them save money as well by locating the cheapest gas at refueling points along the route. For trips over 200 miles we also display the cheapest airfare so they can see if it's cheaper to drive or fly to their destination."

Today C2G also announces the launch of an innovative Facebook application that calculates the cost savings of commuting to work in an electric car. The Commuting Calculator calculates a user's current commuting costs based on the vehicle they drive to work and then compares it with the cost of driving an electric vehicle to arrive at a monthly and annual cost savings. The electricity costs are based on the $ .04 per mile rate that the EPA determined was appropriate for the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf. "Along with the launches of electric vehicles we saw a whole new wave of confusion surrounding the cost of driving these cars" said Mr. Kovarik. "Even the EPA was struggling with it, and so we moved quickly to build the application to help people more easily determine the economic benefits of purchasing an electric car."

Electric Dreams Realised for Mayor of London

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Jon Goodman MD of Peugeot UK

(Vocus/PRWEB) 9 April 2011

The new all-electric Peugeot iOn city car has finished off a whirlwind launch tour of the UK at London’s City Hall, where Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, cast an approving eye over one of the first zero tailpipe emissions cars to go on general sale.

The iOn, which has been showcased to customers and media at Peugeot Dealerships in Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh, Teeside and London in the last two weeks, has received universally favourable reviews from drivers and prompted much debate about how the country can best support electric motoring.

H.M. Government is providing £250M funding for electric vehicles in the form of a £5,000 grant to buyers and funds to support charging infrastructure around the country but London’s unique transport issues make electric motoring a particularly compelling proposition.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "I want London to be the electric car capital of Europe, so I am delighted that 2011 sees manufacturers accelerating their efforts to bring this technology onto the roads. We're going to see electric cars playing an increasing role in pushing down pollution from transport in London as more drivers start to own and run these vehicles. This is why we are introducing the first city-wide electric vehicle scheme, Source London, in spring this year to provide more infrastructure and support."

Source London (http://www.sourcelondon.net) will double the number of current charge points in the capital from the time of its launch and will provide at least 1300 publicly accessible points by end 2013. London was in the first wave of Plugged in Places locations selected by the government to help their pioneering electric vehicle programmes.

Jon Goodman, MD of Peugeot UK, presented the iOn to Mr Johnson, said: “The Mayor has an acute understanding of the challenges for London’s transport and was very interested to hear about how electric cars can fit into city life. On top of the environmental benefits, the Peugeot iOn needs no costly fuel to operate; it is exempt from the Congestion Charge and it is free to park in some London boroughs. That’s a pretty compelling portfolio of savings for London’s drivers.”

Lithium Supply May Not Be Sufficient for Electric Car Battery Production, Study Finds

Papillion, NE (PRWEB) January 29, 2007

The vast majority of world's supply of lithium carbonate, the mineral used to make lithium-based batteries for cellphones and laptop computers is found in just four countries: China, Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia, reports William Tahil, director of research for Meridian International Research in a newly released white paper entitled, The Trouble with Lithium.

In an exclusive telephone interview with EV World (http://www.evworld.com), Tahil contends that all of the world's current production of lithium salts, which are extracted from brine lakes high in the Andes and Tibet, is being utilized for small electronics and other industrial applications, and while production capacity will double in the next fews years, the industry simply can't produce enough lithium to build the hundreds of millions of large-format batteries needed to power the electric cars and plug-in hybrids of the future.

Recently both General Motors and Ford Motor Company unveiled electric concept cars at the North American International Auto Show that make use of lithium-chemistry batteries. As recently as the 2007 State of the Union address, George Bush has been promoting plug-in hybrids and through an executive order is requiring federal fleets to buy them in the future.

Tahil estimates as much of 15% of the world's known reserves of lithium carbonate and lithium chloride would be required to equip each of the world's 800 million cars and trucks with a relatively small, 8 kWh battery pack. GM's Volt concept car is powered by a 16 kWh lithium battery pack. In his view, this is unsustainable.

Instead, Tahil is proposing that two other well-understood battery chemistries be more actively investigated and developed: sodium nickel chloride and zinc-air, both of which offer comparable or greater energy density than lithium without the attendant safety or resource depletion issues. After iron, aluminum and copper, zinc is the most commonly used metal by modern society. A 2005 USGS estimate placed American zinc reserves a 30,000,000 metric tons and world reserves, excluding the US, at 220 million metric tons. Tahil estimates total world lithium metal reserves at just 6,200,000 metric tons.

The complete 45-minute interview with Tahil, who lives in Normandy, France is available as an MP3 audio "podcast" on the EV World web site (http://www.evworld.com).

The New Toyota iQ Is A Stroke Of Genius

New Toyota iQ

Derby, UK (PRWEB) March 4, 2009

With incentives offered to 'go green' and the economic climate starting to be felt in our pockets the general public still doesn't seem ready to move into all-electric cars, despite Gordon Browns suggestion that all cars should be electric within a decade. What appears to put most people off is the limited range, the lack of power, the network of charging points and the expense of recharging. For the super rich an all-electric car with an absurd 500bhp has been launched but with a price tag of over £300k, it's more of a novel super car than a green car.

Nonetheless, the economic situation is a reality and consumers are looking for cars that are cheaper to run without necessarily looking for a budget model. Enter the new Toyota iQ it claims almost 70mpg and with emissions of just under 100g/km, one couldn't get a better deal on your road tax. Usually vehicles labelled in the 'cheaper to run' bracket implies a material cheapness and notion of budget, but this is not what the Toyota iQ is about, its in the A-class Mercedes and Smart car category but ironically its smarter.

The iQ really is a scaled down version of a luxury saloon car, despite its apparent size it is in fact quite roomy. Space has been found by some very clever planning and space-saving innovations like the 3+1 seating arrangement; now tall people can actually be comfortable in a small car without having to side swipe their knees to the 2 o'clock position. The features on the basic models are equally impressive with 15 inch alloy wheels, a miniature air conditioning unit, electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors, a six speaker audio system and as a first, rear airbags to protect the occupants in the event of a rear collision.

Toyota really have demonstrated their prowess at reading the market, the launch of the iQ at this point in time is sheer brilliance. According to test driver Steve Spelman, "The days of the huge gas-guzzlers seems an age away; premium green cars are the new kids on the block, having driven the iQ I think Toyota has pulled a master stroke".

New and used car reviews by Carbag for Pentagon, a fully franchised dealer network located throughout the Midlands and Yorkshire. For more information call 01226 720442 or visit the Pentagon Toyota website.

The Electric Car: The Past Meets the Future

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) September 11, 2009

NovaCharge, the exclusive Southeast authorized channel for ChargePoint™ Networked Charging Stations from Coulomb Technologies, today announced a sales distribution agreement with Green Energy Marketing & Consulting of Tallahassee. GEMC is a leader in promoting electric transportation and related products and services in the state of Florida. NovaCharge and GEMC will combine their talents to promote sales and installation of the ChargePoint Network to Florida's businesses, community colleges and universities, electric utilities, and government agencies.

A kickoff event, The Electric Car: The Past Meets the Future, will be held on September 19 at The Tallahassee Antique Car Museum in Tallahassee, FL from 11 AM to 2 PM. The public is invited to come see and learn about the vehicles. Featured at the show will be a 1907 electric Babcock and a 2009 Tesla Roadster. The cars will be charging from the 50KW solar array that powers a portion of the 100,000 sq. ft. museum thus creating an eco-friendly, greenhouse gas-free, charging solution.

Sullivan-Fahs and her family (father, mother and teenage daughter) drove their plug-in hybrid electric vehicle 5,000 miles across the state last spring teaching automotive technology students, commercial industry, and the public, about electric vehicles. They will make a similar trip this fall, http://eviblog.floridaeaa.org. This time they will be bringing the ChargePoint Network Charging Stations with them to help demonstrate the newest technology in grid-friendly, networked charging stations and the critical role they play in making this new EV infrastructure a reality.

"Fran is passionate about EV technology and is committed to the successful introduction of the newest generation of electric cars," said Helda Rodriguez, president, NovaCharge, LLC. "She is tireless in her efforts to raise awareness and support for this major change in transportation."

Where does the family get its ongoing inspiration to take on such challenging projects? 16-year-old daughter, Joy, describes her feelings about the EV movement. "My friends and I don't talk about it a lot, but we are worried about what our lives will be like with the increasing pollution and greenhouse gases. When I see adults really doing something big to help, it gives me hope for my friends and I to have a good life."
