Zyvex Technologies announces the start of initial sea trials and reveals the first official images of the Piranha Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV). The largest structure ever built with nano-enhanced carbon fiber, the Piranha USV is a 54’ vessel that weighs less than 9,000 lbs. For unmanned operations, the lightweight Piranha USV has dramatic increases in range, payload, and fuel efficiency that make it ideal for long range surveillance, patrol, and anti-piracy operations.
Compared to other vessels built from traditionally heavier materials such as aluminum, the Piranha USV has ten times the range, three times the payload, and a 75% increase in fuel efficiency. “Our materials technology makes this possible,” says Russell Belden, Vice President of the Advanced Composite Solutions group for Zyvex Technologies. “This is a cost-effective platform that will enable useful unmanned surface vessel operations for the United States and our allies. Unmanned aerial operations have proved essential over the last decade and we believe that this platform will deliver a future of secure harbors and safety on the high seas.”
The current customers for the Piranha USV are larger defense contractors who are searching for the most capable maritime platform for their unmanned systems. While unmanned aircraft are able to provide a broad aerial view, unmanned surface vessels can remain on station for weeks and provide a persistent, direct view for surveillance and security. A fuel efficient USV can perform many missions, such as anti-submarine warfare or anti-piracy, at a fraction of the cost of manned aircraft or ships and help identify threats that require manned assets.
While the Piranha USV was initially developed for the unmanned military market, the fuel efficiency advantages hold great potential for a manned military or civilian variant. The estimated $ 2 million boat has already demonstrated a fuel consumption rate of 12 gallons per hour at a cruising speed of 24 kts. Compared to a traditional boat’s consumption of 50 gallons per hour, the Piranha offers a 75% reduction in fuel consumption costs.
Columbus, OH based Zyvex Technologies built the Piranha in its Seattle, WA facility. Zyvex Technologies will continue to build military and civilian variants of the Piranha platform to expand its presence in the maritime market. Larger and smaller versions of the design are also under consideration.

The Council will formally present the plan to Congressional leaders and White House officials and pledged to continue working until the recommendations become law.
Major policy initiatives backed by the Council include: significantly reforming and strengthening vehicle fuel efficiency standards; funding substantial financial incentives for the domestic production and purchase of highly fuel efficient vehicles; growing the supply and demand sides of the biofuels market; and increasing access to U.S. oil and natural gas reserves on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) with sharply increased and expanded environmental protections.
"It's imperative that the United States develop a truly comprehensive strategy to reduce U.S. oil dependence because it threatens our economic and national security," said Steiner. "At Waste Management, we are both a large energy consumer -- having a fleet of 22,000 trucks -- and a renewable energy producer -- our renewable energy projects produce enough green energy to power more than one million homes. I look forward to working with the Council and policymakers in Washington to see the Council's recommendations to enactment."

Fuel consumption is becoming more and more important for new car buyers, according to an exclusive survey by BuyingAdvice.com (http://www.buyingadvice.com/), a leading online resource for auto research and internet price quotes.
The poll, taken among buyers who stated they were with 30 days of buying a new car, found that almost three out of four consumers, 74 percent, said that fuel economy was more important to them now than when they bought their last vehicle.
The poll was conducted among over 2,500 users of the web site's online price quote service and comes as the car market moves into its busiest season.
Recent industry sales figures suggest that rising gas prices have increased the proportion of fuel efficient vehicles being sold in the United States.
Fifty-six percent of those polled said that during their search they had excluded vehicles from consideration because of poor gas consumption.
When asked to rank the importance of gas consumption in their buying decision, more than half, 54 percent, stated that fuel efficiency was “very” important to them when they reviewed their options.
However, the American love affair with horsepower is not over. Forty-four percent of the sample said that performance was more important to them than fuel economy when they chose their vehicle.
BuyingAdvice.com supplies more than 50,000 competitive price quotes to new car buyers each month. The latest survey is one of a series that provide the most up-to-date statistics on car buying trends. The poll was conducted during early August.

Allen Schaeffer, the executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, today issued the following statement on the Obama Administration’s announcement that it was beginning the process of developing “tougher” greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency requirements for cars and light trucks for model years 2017 through 2025.
European Drivers Already Rely On Diesel Cars for Increased Fuel Efficiency
“Meeting the pending ‘tougher’ fuel efficiency targets will require many different solutions and we’re more confident than ever that clean diesel technology is going to be one of those solutions. Only time will tell if the American consumer is ready for plug-in electric vehicles, but they are already telling us loud and clear today that they are ready for more clean diesel technology.
“In Europe, over 50 percent of all the automobiles on the streets today are diesel cars due to their high fuel efficiency, low emissions and long-term durability. While a more modest three percent of cars and light trucks in America are diesel at this moment, these new fuel efficiency targets will dramatically increase the importance of clean diesel cars to U.S. drivers.
Diesel Car Sales Were Up A Whopping 52 Percent in August 2010 - In The U.S.
“Diesel car sales in August 2010 were up a whopping 52 percent from the previous August, and up by 20 percent over July 2010, highlighting American consumers growing recognition of the benefits of clean diesel technology as a new fuel efficient, economical choice with proven long-term value.
“Now more than ever, consumers are cautious with their automotive investment dollars looking more for long-term value, performance and confidence, all of which they get with a diesel vehicle. Background:
In May of 2010, President Obama, in a Rose Garden Ceremony announced a new effort to propose greenhouse gas (GHG) and fuel efficiency standards for medium and heavy-duty trucks and to begin the process for establishing further corporate average fuel economy (CAFÉ) standards for light duty vehicles. (Note—this fact sheet focuses only on the light duty vehicle aspects of this rule. A separate statement will be issued by DTF on the medium and heavy duty truck action.)
Why is this Administration Action important?
It begins the process to establish the future fuel economy and GHG emissions requirements of light duty cars and light trucks. Ultimately these policies will have a substantial impact on new vehicle design, fuels and operations in the 2017 and beyond timeframe.
Will the process require certain fuels and technologies should be used to meet the goals?
No. Typically, NHTSA will establish standards and conditions for manufacturers to meet. Each manufacturer will then make their own technology choices based on anticipated customer needs and their product lineups.
What are the likely strategies that manufacturers could use to meet higher fuel economy requirements in the future?
There are many variables and it is impossible to predict at this stage without knowing the fuel economy and GHG goals, conditions, testing requirements and other factors to determine with certainty which technologies can compete. Here are some of the most likely:
o Downsizing and light-weighting of vehicles across the board will help reduce energy requirements.
o Advancements in gasoline engines: Improvements in gasoline engines, such as downsizing, turbo-charging and the use of direct injection will yield higher fuel economy.
o Clean Diesel already delivers 30 percent more mpg than a comparable gasoline engine and can gain further efficiencies in the future.
o Hybridization: Vehicles such as the upcoming Chevrolet Volt that has a downsized gasoline engine and an advanced hybrid powertrain with battery energy storage.
o Increased use of electric motors for functions previously run by belts on the engine.
o Plug-in Hybrid Electric vehicles powered exclusively by electricity.

Diesels accounted for just under two percent of new car sales in the U.S. in 2009.
Are there new diesel products coming to the US?
Yes. Mazda announced it plans to bring its clean diesel technology known as SKY-D to the U.S. in 2012 in one or more vehicles. Other manufacturers have had rumored announcements of diesel products but have made no formal announcements.
What are the future market potentials?
All car and truck sales have been impacted by the recession of the last two years. However these predictions highlight the range of confidence for more diesels coming to the U.S.
What about Europe; aren’t diesels popular there?
Yes. Diesels have consistently accounted for nearly 50 percent or more of all new passenger car registrations since 2004 in Western Europe, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. Last year, diesel cars made up 45.9 percent of all new passenger registrations (13,665,782 units) in Western Europe.
What about diesel fuel—is it as available as gasoline or do you have to go to a truck stop for filling?
Ultra low sulfur clean diesel fuel is more widely available today at more stations than ever before - more than 52 percent of all stations, according to the U.S. Census Bureau (2010).

The following is a statement on auto fuel standards issued today by Jack Halpern, President of Energy Alternatives for the 21st Century (EA-21):
EA-21 supports President Obama's decision to increase auto fuel efficiency 42% by 2016 as part of a plan for energy independence and security. But if the President means what he says about the need to move the U.S. off of oil, we challenge him to get serious by passing the one measure that should be the centerpiece of such an effort: the proposed Open Fuel Standard Bill. Passing that bill would require auto manufacturers to produce "Flexible Fuel" vehicles that can run on alternatives to gasoline, and would reduce gasoline consumption in new cars by as much as 85%, not just 42%. Better still, Flexible Fuel Cars can be built for an added cost of merely $ 100 a car, not the thousands that it will cost to improve auto efficiency. Mandating that Detroit produce them could have double the impact of today's announced auto fuel economy improvements, at a fraction of the cost.
We aren't suggesting that Flexible Fuel cars be put in place instead of improved fuel efficiency. Improved fuel efficiency will reduce the demand for oil, and thus provide more time for America to devise solutions for alternative ways to fuel our cars. But there is already one alternative available immediately for doing so. So anyone serious about ending our dependence on oil should be looking for ways to put that alternative in place right now.
The Open Fuel Standard measure has already been incorporated in the House Climate Bill. But no action has been taken on the measure (S 835) in the Senate. Although then-candidate Obama said that every car in America should be built that way, President Obama has been silent on the issue.
According to a report issued by EPA during President Obama's first year in office, such an Open Fuel Standard could put 177 million flexible fuel cars on the road in a decade, and would reduce consumption of foreign oil by nearly 25%. To put that impact in perspective this single simple measure -- the Open Fuel Standard -- would have 50 times the impact of the Administration's weatherization program and nearly double the impact of improved fuel efficiency standards.
